We have a new doctor in the group, Dr. Najlaa Hassan!

Today, Najlaa Hassan, defended her dissertation entitled ” Corrosion in Crude Oil Pipelines”. Her work focused on elucidating the dominant mechanisms in corrosion of carbon steel pipelines. We had two very special guests today, Najlaa’s sweet daughter, Emma, and Najlaa’s husband. We missed Travis Dietz and other group members who couldn’t make it. Najlaa will be continuing as a postdoctoral researcher in our group. She totally killed it today. We are so proud of you Najlaa!

Members of Al-Sheikhly and Silverman Lab Groups Enjoy ICIP 2018

Members of the Al-Sheikhly and Silverman Lab Groups enjoyed the Thursday night banquet of the 2nd International Conference on Ionizing Processes this past week. Professor Silverman and his former students Byron Lambert and Fuh-Wei Tang (both at Abbott Vascular) joined current and one former member of the Al-Sheikhly lab group after the banquet on the streets of Annapolis for a photo to commemorate the occasion.

UMD to Host ICIP 2018 in Annapolis

This week, the Laboratory for Radiation and Polymer Science and the University of Maryland will host the 2nd International Conference on Ionizing Processes in Annapolis, Maryland. This conference follows in the footsteps of ICIP 2016, which was hosted in Upton, NY by Brookhaven National Laboratory. Dr. Travis Dietz, Kevin Mecadon, and Devyn Catterton will all be presenting posters at the conference. Dr. Eaman Karim will be presenting during the session, “Interfaces and Nuclear Applications,” on her work entitled, “Elucidation of the Mechanisms of Protons and Alpha Particles-Induced Damages on the Surface Region of 4H Silicon Carbide.”

Daniel Vega Successfully Defense Dissertation

This past Friday, April 27th, 2018, Daniel Vega successfully defended his dissertation entitled, “Examination of an Additively Manufactured Ferritic-Martensitic Steel for Advanced Nuclear Applications.” Daniel’s development of this new material technology is currently being filed for a patent. He will continue working at the Department of Energy as a Nuclear Engineer. The image at the right shows Daniel (center) with Professor Al-Sheikhly (left) and Dr. Stu Malloy (right). Kevin Mecadon Receives CIRMS Student Award

This past Monday, April 16th, Kevin presented his research on radiation grafted, polymer electrolyte fuel cells to the attendees of the 26th meeting of the Council on Ionizing Radiation Measurements and Standards (CIRMS) in conjunction with his acceptance of the CIRMS student award. Kevin can be seen receiving his award certificate from CIRMS President Dr. Zhichao Lin in the photo to the left.

Kevin Mecadon wins 2018 Student Travel Grant Award to Attend CIRMS Conference

Kevin Mecadon was awarded a 2018 Student Travel Grant Award by the Council on Ionizing Radiation Measurements and Standards for his abstract submission entitled, “Radiation Grafting of Ionic Liquids to Synthesize Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells.” Not only will Kevin be provided funds to travel to and attend the conference, which is being held at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, he will also give a short presentation and present a poster at the conference as an attendee. Congratulations Kevin!

Dietz Defense PresentationOn October 25th, 2017, Travis Dietz successfully defended his dissertation entitled, “Synthesis of Novel Co-Polymers Using Ionizing Radiation Grafting Methods for the Extraction of Uranium from Seawater.” Travis would like to expressed his gratitude to everyone who attended his defense in support. Travis will be continuing with his current research as a postdoctoral researcher in the Laboratory for Radiation and Polymer Science in the immediate future.

Travis Dietz and Dr. Ileana Pazos present at 2016 ICIP Meeting

icipgroupphotoThis past week, Prof. Al-Sheikhly, Dr. Dianne Poster, Dr. Ileana Pazos, and Travis Dietz attended the International Conference on Ionizing Processes at Brookhaven National Laboratory. At the conference Travis presented his work on uranium extraction and Dr. Pazos presented her work on nanogel synthesis in both poster and presentation formats. The conference focused on the impacts of science related to the fundamental chemical, physical, and biological effects induced by ionizing particles and photons, especially in relation to medicine and industry.

University of Maryland to host “International Conference on Seawater Uranium Recovery” in July

Uranium-px8y27From July 19th through July 22nd, the University of Maryland and the first “International Conference on Seawater Uranium Recovery,” a conference dedicated to the sharing of science and ideas surrounding the extraction of uranium from seawater. Attendees will include scientists from across the country and the globe from both universities and national laboratories. The conference will have a number of themes including (1) Uranium Coordination Chemistry and Computer-aided Ligand Design; (2) Thermodynamic, Kinetics and Modeling of Uranium Sorption Behavior; (3) Adsorbent Synthesis and Structure Characterizations; (4) Materials Performance Assessment in Seawater; and (5) Marine Deployment and Technology Cost Analyses. The majority of events will be hosted in the Kim Engineering Building. Registration for the conference can be found on the conference website.
